In the opening chapter of The Last Bartender, an unseen American sniper replicated Carlos Hathcock's storied counter-sniper shot that ended the career of "the Cobra" in the jungles of Vietnam. The demonstration below clearly shows that such a shot is more than merely the stuff of legend (or novels).
